Last Saturday evening, I was priveliged to be invited to attend the launch event for this most important and exciting new initiative here on our own doorstep.
In just over four years time it will be 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1 in 1914. Of course it is only very recently that we have lost the last survivors of that conflict, Henry Allingham, who over the years has regularly been interviewed on our local TV news and also Harry Patch – the last “Tommy Atkins”.
How many times have any of us either walked or driven up or down the Road of Remembrance and given any thought as to why it is called that?
The Step-short Project wants to address these matters and ensure that we mark this historic anniversary and commemorate Folkestone’s important role at that time. Perhaps a new and more evocative memorial, perhaps a Visitor Centre with more information available to residents and visitors alike? Anothe project could include renovation of the bunker half way down the hill on the left.
Of course if all this is to take place, there will be a cost and this last weekends events were ” the first salvo of an artillery barrage….(to) mark the beginning of our own battle to secure finding and support for the work of the Project”.
I wish all associated with this excellent enterprise the best of success in acheiving their aims and also I commend this project to all who read this.
